The tunnel is a double tube tunnel of 9,025 m length, with cross passages every 500 m. It crosses three distinct geological formations, clayey squeezing ground, limestone and ophiolites. The excavation through the clayey ground was considered as "probably the most difficult part under construction in the world", according to specialists and was constructed using a unique method, never previously applied worldwide, which was actually developed on site!
